Thanks, worked GREAT. I called HP to complain. Even got kicked up to a higher power. All I wanted was new ink. He told me that the ink was like milk and had a exp date. I told him the ink is in a sealed container and should not go bad until opened for a while. Refused new ink. Didn't care when I told him I did not think I would ever by a HP product. So I won't
I am having a similar problem as "gogophers." I plugged it back in and it started to grind and go through its motions but the display screen never came up and the "on" button never turned blue. Seems as though the "brain" of the printer will not power up.
I had 3 "expired" cartridges so decided to give this a try, although I've never attempted something like this before. Worked like a charm! Thanks for the info and photos, without which I couldn't have done it.
Thanks for the instructions (from a long time ago). I could have bought a wireless printer to replace it. But out of spite to HP, I decided to take this thing apart. And I did, thanks to you. It is cathartic, I must add.
I removed the battery completely, and the "expired" message has gone away. But it does appear that the cartridges are empty after multiple reset cycles (several times unprompted). I have unused ink cartidges from a while ago and only miss one. So I might get one--this time a no-name brand.
It seems that some are experiencing disappointment at the battery removal stage. Reports above of the arm being broken imply the battery retention arm, which does impose considerable force on the battery. Can I suggest instead of removing the battery, simply slipping the corner of a plastic credit card between the battery and the arm for 2 – 3 min thus breaking the circuit.
Thanks so much for the pictures and clear instructions. Seemed to work like a charm so far. A little difficulty removing covers and molex connector, but everything finally worked and so far I have not had the expired message.
Wow what an awesome tutorial! I have two of these printers and both have just started giving me this error message. Tonight hubby and I followed your detailed instructions and it worked like a charm! Didn't even break anything. THANK YOU!!!!
Oh yes, this IS cool. The printer was down for 6 months because I assumed the several new refilled cartridges were the problem. No so grasshopper. Over $100 of new cartridges can now be used. HP...... hummmmm Thanks for these super step by step instructions. I found that by being careful, the white connector with blues wires does not need to be disconnected when a credit card or other narrow piece of material is used to break the connection. All is well that prints well.
Thank you Diehl Unger!! You just became my (and indirectly my youngest daughter's) personal hero. I upgraded my system to Win 8 Pro and the software to dismiss the ink expired errors is incompatible, and it won't actually dismiss manually with the controls on the printer itself! I promised her I would print off a scanned and vectored image of the sleep mode screen from my eBook reader that she's obsessed with and this was the first print with the new OS, so I couldn't do it... Thanks for helping me keep my promise!
Darn, I was hoping this would work for the printer not reading a new cartridge...no such luck!! The piece of junk still tells me my blue cartridge is empty even though it's brand new!!
Hi, Somehow the circuitboard doesn't release. it seems to be stuck at the topside of the printer. i don't want to force it. Any tips onhow to release it?
Oh Happy Day!!! I'm so glad I found this solution. Now I can use my expired ink cartridges. I was about ready to trash my old HP Photosmart 8250 but was hesitant to do so because of the print quality. I probably should have replaced the CMOS battery but I didn't. Anyway, the fix was easier than I expected and the printer works great. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for posting this tutorial. Robert
I am still having a bit of bother getting the RH grey bezel off. It is almost free but is still partly caught at the top corner. You mention another concealed latch at the rear and this may very well be caused by that. Can you post another picture that deals with that or do you have any advice on freeing the top corner (It already seems free at the rear of that corner). Thanks Don

I successfully removed the battery, however after putting the printer back together its dead, no power to it,...any ideas?
thanks a lot for the information! by the way, the PCB screws are not hex but rather T-10 Torx.
it no longer complains about expired ink, but it ate all it's yellow ink in "maintenance". what a piece of junk. no more hp printers.
UGH came so far only to BREAK my spring tension arm!!!!
Hmm, now it doesn't turn on at all. I was careful, I used to work in PCBA manufacturing.

this worked but you must plug the paper looking ribbon back in.....top right of green board.

Hello Sir/Ma'am,
You have really done the great job, wonderful blog with informative stuff,i loves to follow your blog.
Printer Battery
Scanner Battery
Battery Pack
Symbol Battery
Lithium Battery
I took it all apart, just as instructed (even made a video). Got the battery out, let sit over 10 minutes, just to be SURE. It did NOT fix it.
